The Cape of Good Hope SPCA

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is the founding society of the SPCA movement in South Africa and is the oldest animal welfare organisation in the country. It has been active since 1872.

Headquarters of the SPCA is in Grassy Park, Cape Town. A staff of 104 members keeps the Cape of Good Hope SPCA acting for animals. The area covered is vast – around 11 000km2.

Our main aim is to prevent animal abuse. We don’t turn any animal away. No matter what the breed, condition, age or reason for animals being brought to the SPCA. We’re on call 24/7 to respond to rescues and emergencies involving animals.

Our task is to look out for the interests of domestic, farm, working and traction animals, animals reared for consumption, wildlife, animals used for entertainment and exhibitions, as well as animals used in sport and for research. Much of our resources are spent on dealing with cruelty, in many forms.

We also strive to educate school children and the community about animals. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Ani-pal School Enrichment Program was launched in 2003. It teaches children about the basic needs of animals. More information regarding this program is available on our website. There is also information regarding the care of pets available for download.

Students are able to complete their community service or job shadowing at the SPCA. See out website regarding this, shopping for you, your pets and much more! The help of volunteers are always needed!
